Those watching the women's 10 metre synchronised diving final of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio on Tuesday were left a bit perplexed, when they were greeted by a diving pool which had turned a strange murky pond-like colour overnight.
The unappealing emerald colour was in stark contrast to the Water Polo pool adjacent to it at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, highlighting the change that had occurred in less than 24 hours.

Indeed, British diver Tom Daley, who had won bronze the day beforehand with his partner Daniel Goodfellow in the mens event, took to twitter to express the shock and confusion felt by many, posting a picture of the two pools with the caption 'Ermmm...what happened?!'.
Officials were as confused as viewers, with experts initially unable to provide an explanation for the dramatic change of colour, although they have now put it down to a 'proliferation of algae.'
"This [the algae proliferation] was because of heat and a lack of wind,'' Rio spokesman Marlo Andrada stated on Tuesday night. "We did all the chemical tests. The pool will be blue tomorrow"
The pool has since been tested and deemed fit for use, with athletes not reporting any problems despite the strange colour of the water.

It is has also been speculated that the cause of the change of colour was down to the pool not having been shocked with chlorine beforehand.
