![Federica Pellegrini will be Italy's flag bearer at the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro]()
July 26 has provided some good moments in water sports as Italy claimed records and even first ever medals in the pool. Meanwhile, a fan favourite in
Juventus colours was born whilst there was a tragic racing incident at the French Grand Prix back in the 1920s.
1925 - The French Grand Prix was marred by tragedy as Antonio Ascari lost his life at Autodrome de Linas-Montlhery. It was the first ever race at the new circuit, and the Alfa Romeo driver failed to navigate a very fast left-handed corner leading to the straight. He died of his injuries and left behind a seven-year-old son, Alberto, who would go on to make his father very proud.
1966 - Industrious former Juventus and
Fiorentina wing-back and defensive midfielder Angelo Di Livio was born. Nicknamed 'the little soldier' by Roberto Baggio, the versatile playmaker made a name for himself with his tenacity and seemingly endless stamina. He also earned 40 caps for Italy, and at club level won Serie A three times and the Champions League once.
2009 - Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini set a new world record for the 400 metre freestyle event as she clinched a gold medal over a second ahead of nearest challenger Joanne Jackson. After setting a competition record in the heats, Pellegrini went one further and finished the race with a time of three minutes, 59 seconds and 15 milliseconds.
2015 - Italy won their first ever mixed duet synchronised swimming medal as Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minisini grabbed a bronze for the nation at the World Aquatics Championships. The Italian pair ranked third with a points score of 86.3640 for their efforts, whilst Russia took silver and the United States finished top of the pile.
